CM's assurance in vain, 33 medical students expelled for failing to submit bank guarantee

In what is a clear violation of the state government's instructions, the Malabar Medical College in Kozhikode has reportedly expelled 33 MBBS students for not providing bank guarantee amount during admission.

The college management has asked the students not to attend classes without submitting the bank guarantee of Rs 6 lakh, according to reports.

The Supreme Court, in an interim order last month, had allowed self-financing medical colleges in Kerala to charge students Rs 11 lakh as the annual fee. The amount is split as a base fee of Rs 5 lakh during admission and bank guarantees for Rs 6 lakh to be paid in 15 days’ time.

However, the LDF government had directed the medical colleges in the state not to deprive the students of seats for the sake of bank guarantee. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan had assured that no student would lose his admission even if he fails to provide bank guarantee on time.
