Kerala HC initiates contempt case against DGP Thomas for remarks against judges

Synopsis

The petitioner has alleged that Jacob Thomas made contemptuous personal remarks against the two judges. DGP Thomas had made imputations against the judges, who passed orders against him in a case, according to the petitioner. The Kerala government had suspended Thomas from service in December last year for his "anti-government" remarks.

The Kerala High Court on Tuesday initiated suo motu contempt proceedings against suspended DGP Jacob Thomas for his alleged remarks against two judges of the court.

On a petition filed by a lawyer, a division bench of Chief Justice Antony Dominic and Justice Dama Seshadri Naidu directed Thomas to appear before the court in person on April 2. The petitioner has alleged that Thomas made contemptuous personal remarks against the two judges in a complaint to the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC).

Thomas had made imputations against the judges, who passed orders against him in a case, according to the petitioner. The Kerala government had suspended Thomas, the seniormost IPS officer in the state cadre, from service in December last year for his "anti-government" remarks.

Thomas was placed under suspension when he was serving as the director of the Institute of Management in Government (IMG). Earlier, Thomas was removed from the position of the chief of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau by the government.
