
The cabinet of Prime Minister Narendra Modi had been expanded with nine new faces, including four bureaucrats. The swearing in ceremony also saw the elevation of four Minister of State to Cabinet rank.
The ministers of state with independent charge, Nirmala Sitharaman, Dharmendra Pradhan, Mukthtar Abbas Naqvi and Piyush Goyal were promoted to cabinet rank.

The four bureaucrats are former Mumbai Commissioner of Police Satyapal Singh, former Union Home Secretary R K Singh, former diplomat Hardeep Singh Puri and retired IAS officer K J Alphons Kannanthanam. Others sworn in are Shiv Pratap Shukla the Rajya Sabha member from Uttar Pradesh, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, a Lok Sabha member from Rajasthan, Shiv Pratap Shukla, a Rajya Sabha member from Uttar Pradesh and MP's Anant Kumar Hegde from Karnataka and Ashwini Choubey from Bihar.

Alphons and Puri are not members of either houses and are likely to be elected to Rajya Sabha.

Neither All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) nor Janata Dal (United) found space in the council of ministers. Shiv Sena is certainly not happy with the new changes and MP Sanjay Raut said the BJP ignored its allies in the reshuffle and the new government is purely a BJP one.
