  • Harmful medical and animal waste is being dumped in the City lakes.
  • The residents of the locality say these the dumping mostly happens during the late night.
  • Pollution board to collect samples of pollutant.

The residents living around the Ullal Lake fear that soon this lake might become the dump yard for the entire city’s waste, eating up the entire place and grazing yard.

Recently a huge quantity of bio-medical waste was found at the Avalahalli Lake in Bengaluru South. This lake was targeted by illegal garbage dumping mafia and is currently under the official scanner. However, similar waste being found in Ullal Lake in RR Nagar is a matter of concern. The worst thing is that even poultry waste is being dumped there.

The incident came to light three days ago, and the issue was raised in the resident welfare association meetings. "Although the lake has been fenced, there is an entrance at one side, and probably the vehicles laden with various kinds of waste would have been used to dump things here. We have already asked the authorities concerned to look into the issue," said Dr Lakshmikanth, a resident of Sri Gandhada Kavalu in RR Nagar.

Shyam, a resident who goes for an early morning walk, noticed the waste dumped on the tank bed and was surprised as he found bio-medical waste and poultry waste in the buffer zone. "I come here regularly for a walk, and I am shocked to see illegal dumping in the lake. I have asked the special commissioner for solid waste management on BBMP and also Karnataka State Pollution Board to look into the issue," he said.

Confirming the illegal dumping in lakes, Sarfaraz Khan, Special Commissioner for Solid Waste Managemen, BBMP, said he had directed the zonal commissioner to give a report in this regard. “Dumping of waste in lakes is a serious issue. Based on the report given by the Join Commissioner at the Raja Rajeshwarinagar Zone, further steps will be initiated," he said.

The officer said that the lake belongs to Bengaluru Development Authority and that he was not aware of any illegal dumping of waste and debris. "I will inspect the lake area. We have installed barricades around the lake and don’t understand how can vehicles enter the lake bed. We will also check with the BBMP to find out whether their vehicles are coming at night to dump the waste," said Nagaraj, Superintendent Engineer, Lake Division, BDA.

Anil Kumar, Regional Officer, Karnataka State Pollution Control Board, expressed shock and said that he would depute his subordinates to collect the samples found in the lake. "Right now we are busy with NGT order to set Bellandur tank right. We will also look into the complaints received on illegal dumping of waste and release of effluents in other lakes," added Kumar.
