Inaugurating a jackfruit fair at Karnataka's Udupi, MLA Raghupathi Bhat said that consuming jackfruit can keep AIDS away. He also said that this statement was based on several other people's statements.

The two-day Jackfruit Fair was organised by the Udupi District Administration, ZP, Horticulture Department under the Udupi District Dharmasthala Gram Panchayat Scheme.

He also said later that he cannot confirm that jackfruit will be useful to prevent AIDS, but he had heard some people speaking randomly about it. When people talk about it repeatedly, it becomes viral and famous, he said.

He also said that anything prepared out of raw jackfruit can be helpful to control diabetes.

This is the second term as MLA for Raghupathi Bhat. He was not given the ticket in 2013 elections due to the release of the alleged sex tape involving him. He had defeated Congress' Pramod Madhwaraj in 2008 by 2,479 votes. In 2013, BJP's B Sudhakara Shetty contested and was defeated by 39,524 votes by Pramod Madhwaraj.

This time Raghupathi Bhat again won over Madhwaraj by more than 12,000 votes.

However, this statement on jackfruit preventing AIDS is being trolled on social media.
