Too weak to cremate son, 85-year-old woman lives with his dead body for 2 days

Synopsis

The 55-year old son was an alcoholic and his wife lived separately. A strong stench from the house drew the attention of the neighbours. Police said that the woman was in a state of shock and was too weak to seek help.

In a horrifying incident, an 85-year-old woman lived with the dead body of her son for 2 days in Ankola in Uttara Kannada. A strong stench from the house drew the attention of outsiders who broke open the door to find the woman with her son's body. It was crossed the mind of a teacher at an adjacent school that both the mother and the son were dead, which is when she informed the police.

Speaking to the Bangalore Mirror, Ankola inspector Basappa Burli said that the incident first came to light on Saturday morning and the deceased has been identified as Vinod Vishnu Bhat, aged about 55 years. He further added that the woman was probably too weak to go out and seek help. Inspector Burli further added, "The house is located near a school. On being informed by the teacher, we rushed to the spot. We were told that an 85-year-old lady was staying with her son. Since the stench was so strong, initially, we suspected that both the mother and the son may have died. We managed to break open the door and enter the house and were shocked to see that the woman was alive, but her son was dead. Preliminary investigations revealed that he was last seen on Thursday morning.”

It has also been revealed that the man was an alcoholic and that his wife was staying away from him since the past 5 years. Initially, the neighbours thought that both the mother and the son had gone out. Some also suspect that Asha, the mother, might also be in a state of shock since it was hard to convince her to leave the house and get shifted to a hospital so that the house could be sanitised. She kept on saying that she did not want to leave her son behind.
