The dogs have to be injected with anti-rabies medicine and have to be dropped back at the same place. This is one of the reasons why the dog attacks on people are continuing, say BBMP officers.
The street dog menace is back in Bengaluru. Four people including a school-going child was attacked by a street dog at Rajajinagar in Bengaluru.
The injured are identified as 14-year-old Akash, four-year-old Siri, her mother Shalini and grandmother Manjula. The incident is scary as recently a boy named Praveen died after being mauled by stray dogs in the city.
The dog attacked them near a school at Gubbanna Layout in Rajajinagar, 6th Block. Akash was getting out of the auto in front of the school when the dog attacked him. At the same time, Shalini was also in front of the school to drop her daughter Siri and the dog attacked them too.
Shalini is said to have chased the dog when she saw that it was trying to hurt her daughter. The dog instead bit Shalini and her mother Manjula too. Akash was treated at KIMS Hospital, whereas Siri, Shalini and Manjula got necessary treatment at a nearby private hospital.
Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) was informed about the incident and the authorities took away three dogs found near the school compound. The dogs have been kept at the sterilisation centre at Chamarajpet.
Sterilisation a mafia: Padmanabha Reddy
There are complaints that BBMP is not following the court order to sterilise the street dogs. This has led to an increase in their number. Opposition leader in the BBMP, Padmanabha Reddy accused the BBMP of carrying out a mafia in the name of sterilisation of street dogs. He demanded details of the number of dogs that have been sterilised and the money spent on the same.
Sterilisation not working out
However, the BBMP has a completely different argument and the officers themselves have expressed concern over the street dogs turning to be a menace. Dr Anand, Joint Commissioner of the Animal Husbandry Department, BBMP, is of the opinion that the Supreme Court's order doesn't allow us to shift the dogs to a distant place or even to kill them. The dogs have to be injected with anti-rabies medicine and have to be dropped back at the same place. This is one of the reasons why the dog attacks on people are continuing.
BBMP Commissioner N Manjunath Prasad spoke to Kannada Prabha and said, "Earlier, the dogs that turned out to be a menace were caught and killed. But after the Supreme Court's order, all we can do is administer the dogs with rabies injection and sterilise them. Nothing beyond that to control the menace."
