How many of us would quit the comforts of the air-conditioned office to protect the nation along the fenced borders in the Sun? But Spoorthi Bhat was unlike us. An engineering graduate, Spoorti had a plush job with a reputed company and had hefty pay pack. But she had set her goal beyond the life's comforts that came her way. Today, Spoorti is the first Kannadiga woman to rise to the rank of assistant commandant in the Border Security Force (BSF). She is the second officer after Tanushree Pareek of Rajasthan, the first woman combat officer to be inducted into the force.

The 2015 batch officer, Spoorti is presently undergoing training in Border Security Force Academy, Gwalior. Spoorti hails from Puttur in Dakshina Kannada district. She completed her engineering in Electricals and Electronics from the BMS College in Bengaluru. Later, she worked in a private firm in Bengaluru for two years. But Spoorti wanted to serve in the army, so she appeared for the Union Public Service Commission exams. Meanwhile, she had cleared the engineering exams for the railways and was selected for it too. Not satisfied with that, Spoorti took up the Central Armed Police Forces exam. She had to choose between either Central Industrial Security Force or Border Security Force. She chose the latter one, the Border Security Force.

Spoorti was inspired by her father K Balasubrahmanya Bhat, a retired customs officer to join the force. "I wanted her to join either the Indian Administrative Service or the Indian Police Service. But she chose to become the BSF, and we are happy with her choice," reports Kannada Prabha quoting Subrahamanya Bhat, Spoorti's father.

"We need to look beyond jobs like engineering and medicine. We need to inculcate patriotism and take a chance to serve the country. Women too should not hesitate to join the army force," reports Kannada Prabha quoting Spoorti Bhat. Spoorti with her dare to dream attitude is sure to inspire many women.
