Bhagiratha was a mythological character remembered for his relentless struggle and succeeding in bringing Gange the heavenly river to earth. Anyone who works at water conservation is compared to him and here is a man called ‘Modern Bhagiratha’ for his efforts at making his village drought-free by constructing four tanks.

Kalmane Kamegowda hails from Danadoddi village in Malavalli taluk, Mandya district.  He is a shepherd and takes his sheep for grazing at the forest at Kunduru hill.  He wished that Kunduru hill should never go dry and planted 2000 sapling all along its base. He saw that the animals were parched during summer and constructed four tanks, at different points at the base of the hill, for the wild animals to quench their thirst. He has spent all his earnings for this purpose.

He also decided to educate people about conservation of forest and got good quotes to be painted on the boulders along the hill route.  He spends most part of his day at the forest where the saplings he planted have grown tall. Kalmane Kamegowda is a fine example for people to emulate.
