Monsoon to set in by June 10 in Karnataka The scattered rains on Monday are not monsoon, say Meteorological Department

There is a possible delay in setting in of the monsoon in the State and it may enter the State by June 10, predicted the Indian Meteorological Department.

The earlier forecast was that monsoon would arrive in the State by June 7.  However, since the wind speed is not favouring the rain-bearing clouds to advance towards the State, monsoon is delayed. Meanwhile, the Bengaluru Regional office of the Indian Meteorological Department has clarified that the scattered rains received since a couple days in different parts of the State is not monsoon.

The dark clouds gathered over the coastal areas and the subsequent rains are due to the trough caused by depression in the Arabian Sea, said Ramesh Babu, in charge director, Indian Meteorological Department. The monsoon winds will be more severe with high speed; the current wind speed is not favourable for rain bearing clouds to advance, he said.

The monsoon reached Kerala on May 29 and hence its advancement to State was

expected by June 7. However the unfavourable weather conditions have delayed the rains.

Heavy rains lash Mangaluru, Tumkuru

Heavy rains lashed Mangaluru and Tumkuru on Monday, even as the monsoon is awaited in the State.  The roads were waterlogged.  Raichur and Gadag districts reported scanty rains.  In Tumkur the hour long heavy downpour caused Shetty Halli and Kunigal bridges to be waterlogged and traffic was disrupted.  The public were greatly inconvenienced due to waterlogging at Mangaluru also.
