Karnataka rains: Dakshina Kannada, Udupi inundated; Shiradi Ghat closed till August 25

Synopsis

Landslides have been reported in Shiradi Ghat and the main road will be closed till August 25.

People wanting to travel to Dakshina Kannada and Udupi will have to put off their travel plans as both districts are affected by heavy rains. Even Shiradi Ghat connecting Bengaluru and other areas to the coastal region is destroyed.

Landslides have been reported in Shiradi Ghat and the main road will be closed till August 25.

"Buses are plying via Shivamogga. There is a delay of at least two hours than the usual travel. But we are making sure that we reach people home safely," said Sudhir of Sugama Travels in Bengaluru.

But apart from long-distance travelling, rivers and lakes in the coastal area are overflowing, resulting in flooding the residential areas.

People are being evacuated through boats and are being taken to rehabilitation centres.

At least seven people have lost their lives due to floods.

As per reports, in four days, Udupi has incurred a loss of Rs 40 crore. As many as 720 houses have been destroyed (some partially destroyed).

Compensation of Rs 35 lakh has been released from the Natural Disaster Response Fund to the families of seven people who have died in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts.

Rehabilitation centres have been opened at some places and people are being vacated from their homes and are being sent to these centres.
