Samira Rehman, a Pakistani national, who was arrested for staying illegally in Bengaluru, has delivered a baby girl at the Victoria Hospital. And this has put an end to speculation over the baby's nationality as the baby's mother is a Pakistani while her father is an Indian. Technically, the baby will be accorded the Indian citizenship, reports Kannada Prabha quoting experts. The officials of Parappana Agrahara Central Jail have allocated a separate cell at the Women's Wing for the new mother.

The CCB police had arrested Samira Rehman and her relatives Kiran Ghulam Ali and Khasif Shamshuddin on May 22 for staying illegally in Bengaluru. Samira’s husband Rehman who hails from Kerala was also arrested for facilitating their stay. At the time of arrest, Samira was three months pregnant. She delivered a baby girl a week ago at Vani Vilas Hospital, said jail officials.

Senior lawyer Ravi B Naik told Kannada Prabha that irrespective of the nationalities of the parents, a baby is the natural citizen of any country of its birth. Hence, the baby is an Indian Citizen.
