Chief Minister Siddaramaiah gained prominence and rose to the post of deputy chief minister in JD(S). Siddaramaiah even considered HD Deve Gowda, the national president of JD(S) and former prime minister, as his guru. But differences of opinion between Deve Gowda and Siddaramaiah led to the latter getting expelled from the party in 2005.

So far there were no clear indications about what the differences were. But soon after quitting JD(S), Siddaramaiah joined Congress and is currently the chief minister of Karnataka.

Speaking at Ramanagar, during the campaigning for election for May Assembly elections, Siddaramaiah said that if he had continued in JD(S), he would have had to be given the Chief Minister's position against Deve Gowda's son HD Kumaraswamy. That is why he was expelled from the party to make way for Kumaraswamy to adorn the Chief Minister's position.
