Harangi reservoir brims as rains lash Kodagu and coastal Karnataka

Synopsis

Harangi, first dam in the State to be filled to capacity this year recording 2,857 feet 4 crest gates opened to release water into river, to fill up Krishnaraja Sagar Reservoir Almatti Dam recorded 516.30 meters, with inflow of 1.30 lakh cusecs daily Tungabhadra Dam recorded 1604.75 feet water level against its total capacity of 1,633 feet

Following good monsoon at coastal and Kodagu region, the Harangi Dam is filled to capacity, the first dam in the State to be full in this year. Harangi dam, at Kodagu, is receiving inflow of 5,600 cusec water daily. The four crest gates are opened letting water into the river, which again fills up the Krishnaraja Sagar Reservoir (KRS). Harangi Dam is the first reservoir that has to fill up first for water to flow into KRS Dam and hence Harangi Dam filled to capacity is significant.

The catchment area of Bhagamandala, Talacauvery and Kushalanagar received good rains resulting in inflow into Harangi Dam to its 2,589 feet capacity. The officials are maintaining 2,857.21 feet water in the dam and have opened the crest gates to release the excess water. Earlier, the crest gates were offered puja by the officials. Before opening the gates siren was sounded three times to warn people to move to safety. A large crowd had gathered to see the water gushing down the four gates, a sight to behold, reports Kannada Prabha.

In the north Karnataka, the rainfall has decreased in Belagavi. Scanty rains were reported in Khanapur, including the Maharashtra's Konkan region. However, from the Rajapura Dam water is being released into Krishna River at 1.30 lakh cusec daily. Krishna, Veda Ganga, Dood Ganga and Ghataprabha rivers are in spate. The inflow into Almatti Dam is 1.30 lakh cusec on Sunday. The water level in Almatti is 516.30 metres.

Malnad received good rains and Tungabhadra Dam recorded 51,162 cusec water inflow.  The current water level in Tunga Bhadra Dam is 26.211 tmc. Daily 2,359 cusecs water is being released. For the past two days, the water level in the dam has increased by 8 tmc. Of its maximum 1,633 feet capacity, the dam has recorded 1,604.75 feet.
