The Goa government that demolished houses and temples belonging to Kannadigas is now contemplating banning the Lambanis from Karnataka to sell fish in retail at the wholesale fish market, reports Kannada Prabha.

The Goa State Agriculture Minister Vijay Sardesai has stated that he will not permit Lambanis to illegally sell fish in retail at the wholesale fish market. A media report had questioned the government if it can stop the illegal sale of fish in at the Goa wholesale fish market. Responding to this the Minister had tweeted that “challenge accepted. Will ban Lambanis from selling fish in retail.” Goa Fisheries Minister Vinod Palyekar has supported this statement. “There is no provision for selling fish in retail at the wholesale market. Vijay Sardesai’s statement is right,” he said.

The wholesale fish traders at Madagaon had complained that the Lambanis selling fish in retail were harming their trade. Also, they had complained that the Lambanis sell fish at any spot at their wish, causing congestion and cluttering the market. Vijay and Palyekar’s statements followed this.

It can be recalled here that earlier Goa Tourism Minister Manohar Ajagoankar had stated that he would ban Lambanis from trading at the beach and got into a controversy. Lambanis sell shell artefacts, ornaments on the beach. The minister alleged that they were a nuisance to the tourists. Following, protests he had retracted his statement, earlier.
