Karnataka government to provide security to Deepika Padukone

Amidst bounty threats issued on Bollywood actor Deepika Padukone in the 'Padmavati' movie row by fringe groups, the Karnataka state government has decided to provide security to Deepika and her family.

Home Minister Ramalinga Reddy will write to the State DG-IGP Neelamani Raju to provide protection to the actor and her family in Bengaluru, reports The Hindu. Deepika's parents - Prakash Padukone, Ujjala Padukone - and sister Anisha Padukone live in Bengaluru.

Earlier in the day, Energy Minister DK Shivakumar had strongly condemned the threats issued to Deepika Padukone. Shivakumar tweeted that "It is condemnable that a BJP office-bearers is placing bounty on Deepika Padukone, who is from our state and the daughter of one of India's most respected sportsman."

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah too condemned the culture of intolerance and hate perpetuated by BJP leaders. He stated that "Karnataka stands with Deepika Padukone. She is a globally renowned artiste from our state. I call upon the CM of Haryana to take strict action against those holding our threats against her."
