Relief! Acid attack turns out to be adhesive gum, accused absconding

The 41-year-old woman worked as a cook in a paying guest accommodation. She fell in love with the attacker, who is a private firm employee, ten years ago. The man later married but continued his affair with Saraswathi. When the man’s wife and her family, who hail from Andhra Pradesh, found out of the affair they threatened Saraswathi with dire consequences. 

On Tuesday, May 9, Saraswathi was beaten up by her lover’s wife and her family in Basavangudi. Panicking at the situation, the man claimed to throw acid on Saraswathi to scare her and escaped. 

According to Sharanappa S D, DCP South Bengaluru, the Pink Hoysala 244 of Basavangudi swung into action within five minutes of receiving the information and reached the spot immediately, identified the accused and rushed the victim to Apollo Hospital in Jayanagar.  The doctors confirmed that the accused threw adhesive at the victim and not acid. 
As per the records of Acid Survivors Foundation India between the years 2011-2015 there have been 14 cases of acid violation in Karnataka. 

Speaking to Asianet Newsable, Sharanappa S D, DCP South Bengaluru, said, “We are yet to nab the accused. They are absconding. A total of four people, an elderly couple and a middle-aged couple, went to meet the victim. There was a verbal altercation followed by throwing of the substance. The lady called a friend who in turn called the control room. The control room directed the Hoysala which arrived at the spot within five minutes.”

He further added that the names of the accused are known, and a team has been sent to Andhra Pradesh to nab them.
