The Legislature committee for public undertakings has recommended to the government that an ACB probe should be ordered with regard to the failure of BBMP’s proposed power generation from waste plant at Mandoor. The project was initiated in 2002, with the collaboration of Renewable Energy Development Corporation Ltd (KREDCL). A contract was signed between BBMP and M/S Srinivasa Gayatri Resources Recovery Ltd in 2007 to complete the civil works within 20 months ie by April 2009. However, even after eight years it has not been completed, reports Kannada Prabha.
The BBMP has already spent Rs 73.34 crore on this project. Land of 50 acres was handed over to the contractor, who had pledged 6 acres to various banks like Indian Bank on MG Road branch sanctioned Rs 19.75 crores, Oriental Bank of Commerce MG Road branch sanctioned Rs 19 crores and IAFCL sanctioned 14 crores totalling Rs 52.75 crores. The BBMP had also provided a total of 9.88 lakh ton garbage and even spent Rs 5.74 crores service tax. The Pollution Control Board had given green signal to the project.
BBMP had granted permission for the same to the contractor, yet the contractor did not complete the works. The committee has reported that it holds BBMP responsible for the failure in implementing the project. Committee president Dr AB Malaka Reddy submitted the 132nd report of the committee and urged the government to initiate ACB probe in this regard and also start the process to generate power from garbage without any additional burden to the government.
