A viral video from Bengaluru's Kempegowda International Airport has sparked debate online after visuals of passengers resting on floors, benches and open spaces led many social media users to compare the airport to a crowded railway station. The clip, shared by Instagram content creator Aafreen Ahemadi, opens with shots of Terminal 2, a facility celebrated globally for its striking architecture and nature-inspired design.
However, the tone of the video takes a dramatic turn moments later.
After showcasing the terminal's award-winning beauty, the footage shifts to the departure area, where several passengers are seen lying across cement seating structures, using bags and backpacks as makeshift pillows. Others were spotted stretched out beneath indoor trees, trying to catch some rest while waiting for their flights.
The creator overlaid the video with the caption, "Tum jitna bhi International airport banwalo, hum toh desi hi rahenge" (No matter how international-level airport you build, we will still remain desi). The contrast between the airport's world-class infrastructure and weary travellers sleeping in public spaces quickly made the video viral.
The internet, however, remained sharply divided.
Many users criticised the behaviour, arguing that airports are shared public spaces where passengers should exercise greater responsibility and civic awareness.
"There is no desi thing in this, it's called zero civic sense," one Instagram user wrote.
Others rushed to defend the travellers, pointing out that extended layovers, flight delays and limited comfortable resting options often leave passengers with few alternatives. Several commenters also argued that sleeping at airports is a global phenomenon and not something unique to India.
"Have you been outside India? There also people sleep at airport during long overhauls. Also sleeps on the floor inside the airport but let's make reel to demean desi people and look cool," one person commented.
