Synopsis

A 58-year-old woman was injured after falling under a moving KSRTC bus at Channapatna, Karnataka, while trying to get a seat. Overcrowding and inadequate rural bus services have raised public concern. Police are investigating the incident.

A tragic accident at the Channapatna bus stand in Karnataka has raised serious concerns about passenger safety and gaps in public transport services. A 58-year-old woman sustained severe injuries after falling under a moving KSRTC bus while attempting to secure a seat. The incident has triggered public outrage, with many blaming overcrowding and the inadequate number of buses on rural routes for forcing passengers into risky situations.

Details Of the Incident

The victim has been identified as Jayamma, a 58-year-old resident of Honnayakanahalli village in Channapatna taluk. She had arrived at the bus stand to board a bus heading towards Kestur.

According to reports, as the bus began to move, Jayamma hurried alongside it in an attempt to get a seat. While the vehicle was still in motion, she reportedly tried to reserve a seat through the window. In the process, she lost her balance and fell.

In a tragic turn of events, the rear wheel of the bus ran over her hand, crushing it completely. She began bleeding profusely and was immediately rushed to the government hospital in Channapatna by locals and bus stand staff.

Public Anger Over Transport Issues

The incident created a tense atmosphere at the bus stand, with passengers expressing anger towards KSRTC officials. Many alleged that the lack of adequate bus services in rural areas forces commuters to take dangerous risks.

Passengers said buses are often overcrowded, and long waiting times leave them with little choice but to rush when one arrives. This, they added, increases the likelihood of such accidents.

Concerns Over Rising Passenger Load

Commuters pointed out that passenger numbers have increased significantly following the implementation of the Shakti scheme. However, they alleged that the number of buses has not been proportionately increased to meet the growing demand.

Jayamma’s family members have demanded that the transport corporation bear the full cost of her medical treatment. They have also urged authorities to introduce additional bus services on rural routes to prevent similar incidents.

Investigation Underway

Jayamma is currently undergoing treatment at the hospital. The Channapatna police have visited the accident site and initiated an investigation into the incident.
