ISL 2021-22: ATK Mohun Bagan ropes in French midfielder Hugo Boumous from Mumbai City FC

ATK Mohun Bagan has made yet another signing for the upcoming season. French midfielder Hugo Boumous has been roped in from defending champion Mumbai City FC. The 25-year-old would be playing his fourth season in the Indian Super League.


In what comes has yet another significant signing for Indian Super League giant ATK Mohun Bagan, it has roped in French midfielder Hugo Boumous from defending champion Mumbai City FC on a five-year deal. The 25-year-old won the Golden Ball in 2020, while he was also one of the best midfielders of the tournament last season.

The signing comes as a significant boost for ATKMB, as its attacking prowess would now be bolstered to an enormous extent. Having played in India for four seasons, Boumous is quite aware of the style of football and would be able to contribute to the side notably.

It would be Boumous’s third franchise in the Indian Super League, having played for FC Goa between 2018-20. To date, he has played 155 matches, scoring 36 goals, while he has been highly influential in the ISL, scoring 23 in just 49 games.

“I know Kolkata as the Mecca of Indian football. I am happy to sign with the city’s traditional and successful club, ATK Mohun Bagan. I have heard that the joy of playing in front of millions of supporters of the Green-Maroon team in Yuba Bharati is different and I shall play this time to win them,” he told ATKMB.

“I am always hungry to win the trophy. I have brought success to the clubs that I have played in. And, I shall keep this in mind as I play again. I will do my best to win. I am looking forward to seeing the passion and excitement of the Green Maroon supporters after winning the match. Sanjiv Goenka, the principal owner of the team, inspired me to come to Kolkata. I am grateful to him. My goal is to win the AFC Cup and the Indian Super League,” he added.

“Both scoring goals and helping to score goals are equally rewarding. I get pleasure from both. Team’s victory is the main purpose. That is not possible without goals,” he concluded.

Meanwhile, ATKMB head coach Antonio Lopez Habas reckoned, “Hugo is a very fast and technically successful footballer. His personal skills are also very good. Hugo can create attacks as well as counterattacks. That is why he is so successful. With the arrival of Hugo, the strength of the team increased a lot.”
