West Bengal sees sharpest spike in crime against children in 3 years: NCRB

According to the latest National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report released on Tuesday, September 14, West Bengal recorded the sharpest spike in crime against children in the last three years, says the latest report of the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB).

According to the NCRB’s Crime in India 2020 report released on Tuesday, Madhya Pradesh, with 17,008 cases of crime against children, tops the list followed by Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra which registered 15,271 and 14,371 cases respectively. West Bengal ranked fourth with 10,248 cases.

Out of the 36 states and Union Territories, only nine have registered a spike in crime against children, as per the report. West Bengal registered the sharpest spike in such crimes listed under Indian Penal Code and Special and Local Laws.

However, West Bengal and Odisha saw the most increase in crimes against women in 2020 compared to 2019. Assam recorded the highest rate of crime against women in the country for the fourth consecutive year, reveal National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) figures for 2020.

The rate is calculated as the number of crimes recorded per 100,000 population.

There was a 28% increase in the registration of cases in 2020 compared to 2019, primarily owing to the violations of Covid-19 norms across the country. An almost 21-fold jump was recorded in cases of disobedience to the order duly promulgated by public servant and over four times in cases involving violations of other State local laws, according to a National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report.

Meanwhile, cases in UP have been steadily increasing since 2018, which is in contrast to the recent statements made by the state’s Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. A total of 3,42,355 cases were registered under different sections of the IPC in 2018, increasing to 3,53,131 in 2019 and 3,55,110 in 2020.
