West Bengal: FIR against BJP leader Anupam Hazra Over ‘COVID Hug’ threat to CM Mamata Banerjee

Kolkata: A police complaint has been filed against BJP's Anupam Hazra, the new national secretary from West Bengal, who had said he would hug chief minister Mamata Banerjee if he gets COVID-19.
The complaint was lodged by the Trinamool Congress on September 30 evening for derogatory remarks against a woman and head of the state. It seeks action against Anupam Hazra for maligning a public figure, who is a woman, in violation of the Constitution and hurting the sentiments of the complainants.

Sonarpur Town Trinamool Congress president Krishnapad Mandal lodged the complaint. A meeting at Sonarpur intersection to protest the incident took place. Sonapur South Assembly MLA Jiban Mukherjee was present at the meeting. A group of Trinamool workers and supporters led by the MLA surrounded the police station and a complaint was lodged against Anupam Hazra.
MLA Jiban Mukherjee said, “I don't think he is an educated man. I don't even think of him as a human being. It is not possible to become civilized just by having a degree in education. For becoming a good human being, you must have family values and ethics.”

BJP leaders in Bengal have distanced themselves from Mr Hazra's comment. "Those in positions of responsibility must be careful about what they speak," BJP's newly appointed vice-president Mukul Roy said.
The BJP has been accusing chief minister Mamata Banerjee of "misleading" people on the extent of coronavirus crisis in the state by "hiding" real numbers.
