West Bengal Assembly Deputy Speaker Sukumar Hansda died of cancer at a private hospital in Kolkata on Thursday (October 29).

Sukumar Hansda, a two-time Jhargram MLA and former Paschimanchal Unnayan minister, was 65-year-old.

Condoling the death of the MLA, West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee tweeted, “Deeply grieved to hear about the passing away of WB Assembly Dy Speaker and Jhargram MLA Shri Sukumar Hansda.”

The Assembly Deputy Speaker was diagnosed with prostate cancer earlier this year and was being treated for the last few months.

He was earlier admitted to state-run SSKM Hospital in the city and was shifted to the private hospital a few days back.

As a mark of mourning and tribute to the late lawmaker, flags will be kept at half-mast position on all government offices across the state on Thursday (October 29).
