A viral video from Haridwar, Uttarakhand has triggered strong reactions online after two men were allegedly seen dumping chicken biryani rice into the Ganga river. The video, which has spread widely across social media platforms, reportedly shows locals confronting two men near the riverbank after they allegedly emptied rice from a drum into the water.
In the footage, one of the accused men is seen leaving the spot on a motorcycle while another man is stopped and questioned by angry locals. People in the video can be heard asking why the river was being polluted and why food waste was being thrown into the Ganga.
The incident has sparked debate online around religious sentiments, river pollution, civic sense and environmental responsibility.
According to local reports and social media posts, saints and devotees in Haridwar expressed anger over the alleged act.
Many users online called the incident disrespectful towards the Ganga, which is considered sacred by millions of Hindus across India.
Several people demanded strict legal action against those involved.
One user wrote that the river was already suffering because of pollution and that such acts only worsened the situation.
Another social media user said dumping non-vegetarian food into the river hurt religious sentiments deeply and should be treated as a criminal offence.
Some users tagged Haridwar Police and the Bharatiya Janata Party leaders, demanding immediate arrests and punishment.
While many people condemned the act strongly, some users also pointed out that river pollution is a much larger issue that goes beyond one viral incident.
One user questioned why sewage waste and industrial chemicals discharged into the Ganga often receive less public attention.
Another social media post said poor civic sense and lack of awareness remain major problems in India when it comes to protecting rivers and public spaces.
Some users criticised attempts to turn the issue into a communal or religious controversy, arguing that no river or water body should be treated as a dumping ground, regardless of religion.
At the same time, a few posts made extreme and violent comments demanding harsh punishment for the accused, while others called for environmental awareness and community service instead of aggressive reactions.
The viral Haridwar video surfaced just days after a similar controversy in Uttar Pradesh's Varanasi drew national attention.
In March this year, eight men were accused of allegedly disposing of leftover chicken biryani into the Ganga during an iftar gathering in Varanasi.
The case led to protests and strong reactions on social media.
Recently, the Allahabad High Court granted bail to all eight accused in separate judgments.
Justice Rajiv Lochan Shukla granted bail to five accused, while Justice Jitendra Kumar Sinha granted bail to the remaining three.
According to court observations mentioned in the judgment, three accused, Mohammad Sameer, Mohammad Ahmad Raza and Mohammad Faizan, apologised before the court if any religious sentiments had been hurt.
They also reportedly undertook that they would not repeat similar activities in future.
Their lawyers argued that the accused had been falsely implicated, had no criminal history and had remained in jail since March 17.
Concerns over pollution and religious sensitivity
The latest Haridwar incident has once again highlighted the sensitive connection between environmental protection and religious emotions surrounding the Ganga river.
For millions of people, the Ganga is not only an important river but also a symbol of faith and spirituality.
At the same time, environmental experts and activists have repeatedly warned about rising pollution levels in the river caused by sewage, industrial waste, plastic dumping and public negligence.
Many users online said the focus should remain on keeping rivers clean instead of turning such incidents only into political or communal arguments.
Others demanded stricter monitoring and awareness campaigns near major religious sites to prevent littering and dumping into water bodies.
As of now, there has been no official public statement confirming whether a police case has been registered in connection with the viral Haridwar video.
However, the footage continues to circulate widely online, with users demanding accountability and stronger action against those accused of polluting the river.
