Synopsis

The All India Trinamool Congress slammed PM Modi after Mamata Banerjee and party MPs were detained by Delhi Police during a protest. The party termed the action a 'Super Emergency' and a 'dark day for democracy,' questioning the government's fear.

Mounting a sharp attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the central government, the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Saturday asked, "What are you so scared of?" after former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and several party MPs were allegedly detained by the Delhi Police during a peaceful demonstration in the national capital.

Terming the police action a sign of a "Super Emergency" and a "dark day for democracy," the party accused the authorities of curbing the constitutional right to dissent, alleging that the leaders were barred from raising slogans or displaying posters before being unlawfully bundled into police vans and taken to an undisclosed location.

TMC Slams 'Super Emergency'

In a post on X, the official handle of the party posted, "SUPER EMERGENCY IS GOING ON - @MamataOfficial. While our Hon’ble Chairperson, along with our Hon’ble MPs, were peacefully protesting, Delhi Police came and instructed that no slogans and no posters were allowed. WHY?" SUPER EMERGENCY IS GOING ON - @MamataOfficial While our Hon’ble Chairperson along with our Hon’ble MPs were peacefully protesting, Delhi Police came and instructed that no slogans and no posters were allowed. WHY? Then, they unlawfully forced our Chairperson and our MPs into a police van and are now taking them to an undisclosed location. WHY? @narendramodi WHAT ARE YOU SO SCARED OF? Have you simply forgotten that India is a democratic country and every single person has the right to protest? #SaveDemocracy — All India Trinamool Congress (@AITCofficial) October 10, 2026

"Then, they unlawfully forced our Chairperson and our MPs into a police van and are now taking them to an undisclosed location. WHY? @narendramodi WHAT ARE YOU SO SCARED OF? Have you simply forgotten that India is a democratic country and every single person has the right to protest?" the party added.

Directing sharp criticism at the Delhi Police and the Union Government, the TMC called it a "dark day for democracy." "@DelhiPolice HOW DARE YOU? Since when did arresting peaceful protesters become the norm in our democracy? When peaceful dissent is met with arrests instead of dialogue, it raises serious questions about the state of our democratic values," the party wrote.

Issuing a stern message to the ruling dispensation, the party said, "The Mo–Shah duo may continue to push the limits, but no government is above accountability, and no power is permanent. @narendramodi, REMEMBER THAT! A dark day for democracy. A reminder that the fight to protect it must never stop…"

Mamata's TMC Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament Samirul Islam on Saturday lashed out at the authorities after several party leaders were detained by the Delhi Police during a demonstration in the national capital.

In a post on X, the TMC parliamentarian alleged that detained leaders were being driven across Delhi inside a police vehicle without being informed of their destination. Is this a Super Emergency? For the past one and a half hour, we have been driving around the entire city of Delhi, and we don't know what they are going to do with us. Isn't this a Super Emergency? https://t.co/p0iOXtlt7D — Samirul Islam (@SamirulAITC) October 10, 2026

"Is this a Super Emergency? For the past one and a half hours, we have been driving around the entire city of Delhi, and we don't know what they are going to do with us. Isn't this a Super Emergency?" Islam posted.

The remarks came shortly after Delhi Police detained a delegation of Trinamool Congress parliamentarians and leaders who were staging a protest in central Delhi. Visuals from the ground showed leaders being escorted into police vans by security personnel.

Separate CJP Protest Sees Mass Detentions

Earlier, around 1,000 protesters have been detained across the national capital so far on Saturday while attempting to march towards Jantar Mantar for a Cockroach Janta Party (CJP)-led protest demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, Delhi Police sources said.

Delhi Police continued to take demonstrators into preventive custody after informing them that permission had not been granted for the gathering.

Activist Alleges Detention on Aircraft

CJP activist Abhijeet Dipke, who travelled from Mumbai to Delhi to participate in the protest, posted a video on Instagram alleging that police personnel detained him and his associates as they disembarked from their flight at Delhi Airport. In the video, Dipke is heard alleging that police personnel entered the aircraft and attempted to detain them.

"So, you can see that Delhi Police is entering the plane to arrest us. They are all entering the plane. We just landed. All the Delhi Police officers are standing in the aisle. They are trying to arrest us from inside the plane. The entire Delhi Police is getting on the plane... This is the fear of Narendra Modi... Not even Indira Gandhi did this during the Emergency. All we wanted to do is a peaceful protest, and they are picking us up from the flight like we are criminals," he said.

He further alleged, "You can see where the nation is heading. They are here to arrest us directly from the flight. This is something not even Indira Gandhi had done. This is dictatorship, where Delhi Police has entered the flight and is trying to arrest us. Come on, arrest us. We are here to be arrested. Come on, arrest us. We are here to be arrested... We are not afraid of you."

Heavy Security, Detentions Across Delhi

Meanwhile, security personnel remained deployed at multiple locations across the national capital as CJP activists continued their call for a protest against the Election Commission of India (ECI).

Entry points to Delhi were placed under heightened security, while 46 Metro stations remained closed, according to the details provided.

As part of the security arrangements, the New Delhi district was divided into 20 operational zones, with dedicated detention centres established for each zone, police said.

"The New Delhi district has been divided into 20 zones, and dedicated detention centres have been set up for each zone. Stadiums across the national capital have also been converted into temporary detention centres," the police added. (ANI)
