Shocking! Khasi governess humiliated for her attire in Delhi Golf Club

Synopsis

Tailin Lyngdoh is a professional governess who was invited to the Delhi Golf Club, but was humiliated for her ethnic attire. She was asked to leave the premises because she looked like a maid. Her employer, Dr Nivedita Barthakur, an entrepreneur and an honorary advisor to Assam government expressed her disappointment on social media.

India is known for its multi-faceted culture and ethnicity. While this is appreciated by everyone outside India, the ignorant Indians end up humiliating it. A professional governess, Tailin Lyngdoh, has been travelling the world in this attire and never has she been humiliated for her attire 'jainsem'. A native of Meghalaya, she was asked by the Golf Club officials to leave the premises because she looked like a 'maid'.

Ironically, Lyngdoh was invited by a longstanding member of the club as one of the guests to the Golf Club, along with her employer, Dr Nivedita Barthakur, an entrepreneur and an honorary advisor to Assam government.

Narrating Lyngdoh's ordeal on Twitter, she said, "An example of North Indian bigotry, chauvinism and ignorance: many of us have been slighted in the Capital of India for being from northeast part of the country and have lived to tell our tales. While we were seated and having a conversation, two people approached and said Tailin could not sit with us as her dress looked like that of a maid. They said she looks like a Nepali, as if they equate them to domestic helps. I told them she was part of the invite and was participating in the conversation. I pointed out she is wearing her cultural dress, a jainsem like others in the room are in salwar kameez but they did not pay heed to us."

But, what perplexed the duo was the fact that the club had regular visitors including intellectuals and bureaucrats and yet they did not know about the attire and chose to be silent spectators of the wrong-doing. Barthakur said, "It was so appalling at many levels: that a citizen of India is judged on her dress and treated as a pariah. That in this day and age, human rights of so many citizens can be trampled on just because one earns an honest living. And that mainland India still has to be educated on their countrymen seven decades after freedom. And what is this hangover that we are whiter than whites and frown upon Indian wear in these hallowed bastions?"

She further added, "Today, Tailin Lyngdoh, an extremely proud Khasi lady who has travelled the world in her jainsem from London to UAE was thrown out of Delhi Golf Club because her dress was taken for a maid's uniform! Despite she being invited in her own right as a guest of a member, she was humiliated by the two gatekeepers of haute culture of Delhi. She has been to the best of restaurant wearing the same traditional dress. It is surprising that in her own country, people mistreated her while the world respected her attire."
