Rajasthan: Distressed woman leaps into brother's pyre

Synopsis

A 28-year-old woman, distressed by the death of her brother, allegedly committed suicide by jumping into his burning pyre in Dungarpur district.

Durga, a mother of three, was living with her brother Velaram Manat (35) for the last two to three years, the police said.

Velaram died in a road accident on Thursday night and his funeral was performed yesterday in Satirampur village. After lighting the pyre, the relatives went to their respective houses, they said.

"During this time, the woman reached the cremation ground where the pyre was still burning and reportedly jumped into it. A man spotted her and informed the family members," police said, adding by the time her family members reached the spot, she had died.

After a doctor confirmed her death, her half-burnt body was also cremated there, they said.
