Priyanka Gandhi Accuses Assam Govt of 'Mafia and Syndicate Rule'

Ahead of the 2026 Assam Assembly elections, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Wednesday lambasted the Assam government, accusing it of corruption and alleging that administration in the state operates under "mafia and syndicate rule." She added that the people of Assam were tired and wanted the state to rise. She said that the public wants a "new government that would only work towards serving people." Speaking to reporters during a public rally in Nazira, she said, "This is a corrupt Govt. People can see how everything is being done through threats. There is mafia rule, syndicate rule. I think people are tired...They want the same Assam to rise, which once existed. They want a new government that would only work towards serving people. People know that our leader is honest and they want to bring him forward."

'How is that politicisation?': Priyanka Gandhi on Zubeen Garg's Death

Taking aim at Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's accusation that the Congress is politicising the death of popular singer Zubeen Garg, Priyanka Gandhi also said that the Congress will make every effort to give justice and asked, "How is that politicisation?"

She said, "I honestly don't believe that such things should be politicised. I don't think so but I think that when there is a demand among the public that somebody who they revered and respected is not getting justice, then - as politicians - isn't it our duty to say that yes, we are going to make every effort to give justice? How is that politicisation?"

Congress Promises Justice, Permanent Land Deeds

Earlier today, Gandhi also talked about providing justice to the Assamese singer Zubeen Garg's death, promising swift action. "The Congress government wants Zubeen Garg ji to get justice. Within 100 days, as soon as our government is formed, we will get him justice. Today, all local 'Bhumiputras' have received temporary land deeds. We will give permanent deeds instead of temporary ones to 10 lakh local sons of the soil," she said while addressing a public meeting here.

Assam Election Landscape

Her remarks came amid heightened political activity in the run-up to the state assembly elections, as the polling for all 126 Assembly constituencies will be held in a single phase on April 9, while the counting of votes is scheduled for May 4.

Assam will witness a fight between the incumbent BJP-led NDA government and Congress for the 126-seat assembly. The BJP is contesting the elections with Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and Bodoland People's Front (BPF). The NDA will look to secure a third consecutive term, while the Congress aims to defeat the ruling party to return to power. (ANI)
