PM Modi delivers tap water connection to over 1 lakh homes under 'Har Ghar Jal' mission

Synopsis

Countrywide over 1 lakh homes that were dependent on open wells, tanker water supply or walk up to miles to nearby ponds can now breathe a huge sigh of relief under PM Modi's' Har Ghar Jal' mission.

After a promise made in 2019 to get water supply to their homes from taps right at their doorsteps by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, over one lakh homes have been provided tap water connections.

Under the PM's pet project 'Har Ghar Jal' mission, so far 1,00,275 villages and  50,309 gram panchayats in 71 districts across the country have benefited.

Confirming the same, Bharat Lal, Mission Director, Jal Jeevan Mission has stated that the rural homes in the Country had below 18% tap water connection and after the launch of the program by PM in August 2019, the tap water connection has now increased to 40.77%.

Under the mission States and Union territories like Telangana, Goa, Puducherry and Andaman and the Nicobar Islands have been benefited. As per reports under this mission Rs 26,940 crore has been allocated to different States as 15th Finance Commission. This grant is to empower Panchayat Raj Institutions and Gram Panchayats towards the management of water and sanitation.

According to reports, areas that are hit by water scarcity, dominated by SC/ST population and minority population and areas that report the supply of unhealthy water supply through other means are selected on a priority basis and the project is executed. The project also helps the government to generate employment at rural levels.

By 2024, under this mission the states are expected to ensure sufficient good quality water supply to every rural household and a total outlay for the project is 3.60 lakh crore.
