Prime Minister’s residence will no longer be known as 7 Race Course Road as the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) on Wednesday renamed the road as Lok Kalyan Marg. Bharatiya Janata Party lawmaker Meenakshi Lekhi had earlier written a letter to the government insisting that Race Course Road be renamed as “Ekatma marg” since it “doesn’t match with the Indian culture”.
Lekhi who is also a member of the NDMC wanted the road to be named after the philosophy Ekatma Manavvad or Integral humanism coined by Deendayal Upadhyaya. Upadhyaya was the chief of Bhartiya Jana Sangh from 1953-1968 and is also known for standing against communism and capitalism.Meanwhile, AAP MLA and a member of the NDMC, Surinder Singh suggested that the road be named after Paramvir Chakra awardee, Flight Lieutenant Nirmal Jit Singh Sekhon.
However, Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal along with Lekhi today announced that the road has been renamed as Lok Kalyan Marg. According to media reports, Kejriwal said "There were some suggestions in NDMC meeting, but consensus was that Race course road be now called Lok Kalyan Marg.”
It was just last year when the Aurangzeb road in Lutyens’ Delhi was renamed as Dr A P J Abdul Kalam Road after a BJP MP had proposed for the change to “correct the mistakes made in our history”.
