New Delhi: Amid escalating tensions following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 civilians, the Indian Army has responded to unprovoked small-arms fire and artillery shelling from Pakistani positions across the Line of Control (LoC) during the night of May 7 to the early hours of May 8, 2025, as confirmed by Indian Army officials.

The Pakistan Army resorted to unprovoked small-arms fire and artillery shelling from posts across the Line of Control (LoC) in areas opposite Kupwara, Baramulla, Uri, and Akhnoor in Jammu and Kashmir.

The Indian army said in a statement, "During the night of 07-08 May 2025, Pakistan Army posts resorted to unprovoked fire using small arms and artillery guns across the LoC in areas opposite Kupwara, Baramulla, Uri and Akhnoor areas in J&K. The Indian Army responded proportionately."

The artillery shelling targeted civilian areas, causing damage and putting local residents in immediate danger. The firing, which continued late into the night, has heightened tensions between India and Pakistan, particularly in the aftermath of India's significant military operation, Operation Sindoor, which dismantled terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK).

Pakistan’s latest artillery attacks appear to be in retaliation to India's air strikes, where nine terror sites were successfully destroyed as part of Operation Sindoor. The operation, carried out by the Indian Armed Forces, targeted key terrorist camps and infrastructure aimed at eliminating leaders and operatives of terror groups like Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) and Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), responsible for attacks on Indian soil.

The continuing violence along the LoC follows heightened tensions between India and Pakistan, especially after the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, which led to India’s air strikes under Operation Sindoor. The attack by Pakistani forces is seen as an attempt to escalate the situation further and create instability in the region.
