Oracle has began laying off people in its global locations as part of a larger cost-cutting and organisational restructuring initiative, according to Business Insider. Notifications were sent to impacted employees early Tuesday, but the entire scope of the job losses remains unknown. Amidst this, a Reddit post headlined "After 20 years and 2 years before retirement, my dad just got laid off via email" has piqued the internet's interest. The post revealed how an employee with cancer lost his job without even receiving a phone call.
“My dad has worked for Oracle for 20 years, worked for the same boss for 20 years. Not even a phone call. These companies are evil. What is he supposed to do for the next 2 years? Keep in mind, he has cancer and now he has no health insurance,” the user wrote.
The post instantly ignited an internet conversation, with many others sharing similar stories. "I'm sorry to hear that. Many personnel who were instrumental in the company's development and made significant contributions were laid off by email. "This is really not right," one person said.
"My dad was likewise laid off after 19 years. He has cancer as well. And in this country, he has a month to pack his luggage for his own country. 35 years old and packing up in 30 days. "Yes, companies don't care," said another.
Some users shared their own experiences of being laid off after long tenures. “I was with the company for 17 years and I was just notified by email about my position as well. Best of luck to everybody out there! Go kill it!” one user wrote.
The layoffs appear to be occurring in stages around the globe. The termination email, which Business Insider obtained, notified employees that their positions had been removed "after careful consideration of Oracle's current business needs". It further said that the decision was part of a larger organisational change and that the impacted employee's final working day would be imminent.
"We are grateful for your dedication, hard work, and the impact you have made during your time with us," the subject line reads. Employees were also urged to give a personal email address as soon as possible in order to receive separation-related documentation, and access to business systems was to be withdrawn quickly.
