Man arrested in Kolkata for posing as PWD minister Aroop Biswas’s relative, demanding money from woman

A man whose surname is Biswas tried to extort money from a woman on the phone by promising her a government job. He introduced himself as minister Aroop Biswas’s relative. Acting on a written complaint by Aroop Biswas, police, on October 5, arrested the accused from Regent Park police station area.  

Kolkata: A person was arrested in Tollygunge for allegedly posing as a relative of West Bengal PWD minister Aroop Biswas and demanding money from a woman.

The name of the accused is Akash Biswas. He got caught when the woman from whom he demanded money became suspicious and reported the matter to police on October 5 afternoon. He was arrested in the night based on a complaint Aroop Biswas lodged with Regent Park Police Station.

The woman, Mitali Bhattacharya, alerted Regent Park Police Station. She accused the man of demanding Rs 10,000 for a government job with the assurance that the minister would look into it.

Preliminary investigations revealed the woman might not be the only person whom the man had introduced himself as the relative of Aroop Biswas, the minister in charge of PWD and youth services and sports department.

Police seized the mobile phone which was used to make the call to demand money from the woman.

A police officer said, “The accused was arrested by tracking his mobile phone location. We are investigating the matter. The accused has been booked under sections of the Indian Penal Code that pertain to cheating, extortion, defamation and criminal conspiracy.”
