Mamata Banerjee declares public holiday on Harichand Tagore’s birthday

At a meeting in Bangaon, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee declared Harichand Tagore's birthday a public holiday. It is speculated that the TMC will win the votes of the Matuas after announcing this holiday. 

In the last Lok Sabha elections, the Trinamool Congress was defeated by the BJP in the Bangaon assembly constituency of West Bengal. However, this time, the TMC is making all efforts to win the votes from there. 

At a meeting in Bangaon, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee declared a holiday on the birthday of Harichand Tagore. On Tuesday (December 15), Nabanna (state secretariat) issued a notification regarding the declared holiday on Harichand Tagore’s birthday. 

From Bangaon, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee spoke out against the BJP's amended citizenship law. From the public meeting, Mamata Banerjee said, “Matuas are citizens of the country. there is no need to prove their citizenship.”

Besides, the Chief Minister said that NRC and NPR will not be allowed in the state.

Matua vote bank is important for all parties in the upcoming assembly elections. According to sources, there are about five crore people of Matua community living in the whole country. About three crore people of Matua community live in West Bengal. In this situation, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee tried to win the hearts of the Matuas by declaring Harichand Tagore's birthday a public holiday. 

Incidentally, the amended citizenship law has been passed but has not yet come into force. According to BJP sources, the law may come into force in January across the country. Meanwhile, there is a conflict within the Tagore family as to which party will win the hearts of the Matuas. On the other hand, the issue of citizenship is always a sensitive issue for the Matuas.
