A split-second intervention by a Railway Protection Force officer saved a 55-year-old woman from falling into the gap between a moving train and the platform at Akola railway station in Maharashtra. Assistant Sub-Inspector Sonal Ingle's swift action marked her second such rescue in seven days.
The incident took place on platform number one as the Nagpur-Ahmedabad Prerna Express (22138) was pulling out of the station on October 17. The woman, identified as Sangeeta Bharat Khatri, had come to see off an elderly relative travelling on the train.
Amid the rush of devotees travelling to visit a Jain temple, Khatri attempted to get off the moving train from the opposite side. She lost her balance and began slipping into the gap between the train and the platform.
Ingle, who was on duty nearby, spotted her falling and rushed to her aid. She grabbed Khatri and pulled her towards the platform, preventing a potentially fatal accident. The woman sustained only minor scratches.
Following the rescue, Khatri and her family expressed their gratitude to Ingle and the railway administration.
The October 17 incident was not the first time Ingle had stepped in to prevent a passenger from being seriously injured at Akola station. On October 10, she rescued an elderly passenger with a disability who was falling while attempting to board the Navjeevan Express (12655), which runs from Ahmedabad to Chennai. That incident occurred on platform number two.
