Kerala News HIGHLIGHTS: Former Chairman of Pattambi municipality and Congress leader KSBA Thangal passed away on Sunday (July 30) at a private hospital in Ernakulam.

4.55 PM: Congress leader KSBA Thangal passes away

KSBA Thangal, former chairman of Pattambi municipality, DCC vice president and Congress leader passed away at the age of 61. He breathed his last at a private hospital in Ernakulam while undergoing treatment for cancer.


3.05 PM: Reshuffling in top brass of Kerala police; TK Vinod Kumar appointed as Vigilance Director

The position of Director of Vigilance has been given to TK Vinod Kumar IPS, who was set to be elevated to DGP. Manoj Abraham IPS will serve as ADGP Intelligence. The position of Jail Superintendent was subsequently vacated by K. Padmakumar to the fire force department. The new jail administrator is Balram Kumar Upadhyay.  Kochi Commissioner Sethuraman was also transferred. A. Akbar will be the Commissioner of Kochi.  Sethuraman will be IG for the  North Region. Previously serving as the IG for the North Zone, Neeraj Kumar Gupta was now in charge of the Police Headquarters.
 


1.37 PM: 'UP model should be implemented in Kerala to deal violence against women', says BJP state president K Surendran

BJP state president K Surendran on Sunday said that Kerala should implement the U.P. model to protect law and order as the government has failed to prevent crimes and violence against women and children. He said that the Home Department has collapsed badly in Kerala. How the U.P. deals with criminals and mafias, should be followed in Kerala too, he said. Surendran's reaction comes after a five-year-old girl was sexually assaulted and killed by a Bihar native Ashfaq Alam. 


1.25 PM: Aluva sexual abuse and murder case: Accused Ashfaq remanded for 14 days

The accused in the sexual assault and murder of a five-year-old girl in Aluva has been remanded for 14 days. The Aluva police produced the accused at the magistrate's house on Sunday and was transferred to the Aluva sub-jail. Police said that the accused abducted the girl on Friday at 3 pm and took her to a store where he bought her juice. He was later spotted with the child in the Aluva market area. The incident was reported to have occurred that evening between 5:00 and 5:30, according to the police.


1.01 PM: Dr. Vandana Das to be granted with MBBS degree posthumously

Dr. Vandana Das who was brutally stabbed to death by a drug addict Sandeep in May this year will be awarded MBBS degree posthumously by the Kerala University of Health Sciences. The decision was made at the 75th governing council meeting of the university which was chaired by vice chancellor Dr Mohanan Kunnummal.


10.15 AM: Couple arrested for sexually assaulting 15-year-old, selling videos on Instagram

A couple in Kulathupuzha of Kollam district were arrested for sexually assaulting a 15-year-old girl. The accused Vishnu and his wife Sweety were arrested on Saturday for the crime and for selling the video through Instagram. 


9.55 AM: Man missing case: Wife Afsana to be released from prison today

Afsana, who testified that she killed her husband in Pathanamthitta, will be released from jail today. Yesterday, the court granted bail after discovering that Afsana's claim that she killed Naushad, a Kalanjoor resident, was untrue. Today, the bail order will be delivered to Afsana in the women's sub-jail in Attakulangara, Thiruvananthapuram.

9.00 AM: Newly-wed couple goes missing after falling into Pallikkal river while taking photographs

On Saturday while shooting pictures on the river bank, a newlywed couple fell into the Pallikkal river and went missing. A relative who tried to save them drowned in the effort.


8.53 AM: BJP's Sobha Surendran appointed as 'prabhari' of Kozhikode district

BJP state vice-president Sobha Surendran has been appointed as prabhari (in-charge) of Kozhikode district. The decision was made as tensions between Sobha and a few notable BJP leaders in the state are rising.


8.50 AM: Actor Suraj Venjaramoodu's car collides with bike in Kochi; One injured

Actor Suraj Venjaramoodu's car collided with a bike in Palarivattom on Sunday at 12 am. Sarath, a resident of Manjeri, Malappuram suffered injuries. He was soon admitted to a private hospital in Palarivattom. According to hospital authorities, Sarath will have to undergo surgery on his leg. The Palarivattom police have registered a case in the accident.


8.35 AM: Mortal remains of 5-yr-old girl killed in Aluva to be cremated today

The mortal remains of the young girl who was sexually assaulted and later killed will be cremated today at 10 am at Keezhmad Panchayat public crematorium. The body was taken for public viewing at the Thaikkattukara school complex this morning.
