Kerala Governor slams CM Pinarayi Vijayan on petition against CAA

Synopsis

Kerala Governor Arif Mohammed Khan slammed chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan-led Kerala government, as they moved the Supreme Court against the newly amended Citizenship Amendment Act(CAA) on January 14. This is the first time a state has approached the apex court against the CAA.

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Governor Arif Mohammed Khan on January 16 slammed the state government. He said Pinarayi Vijayan-led Kerala government’s move of knocking the Supreme Court’s doors against the newly amended Citizenship Amendment Act without informing him was improper.

Khan told media that he has no issues if the state government approaches the Supreme Court, but they should have at least informed the head of the state, and what they did is improper, he said.

Reacting to this, Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan said, "It would be good if those speaking now spend time reading up on the Constitution. Everything is written in it. This is a country where democracy prevails and not the yesteryear's 'resident' who reigned supreme over local kingdoms. No resident is above the Assembly."

Kerala government heads to SC:

The Kerala government on January 14 had challenged the new Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) before the Supreme Court, becoming the first state to do so amid nationwide protests against the religion-based citizenship law.

The Kerala government said the CAA violates Articles 14, 21 and 25 of the Constitution of India. The Act also violates the basic principle of secularism.
