Synopsis

Just a few hours after CM BS Yediyurappa announced a ban on the use of firecrackers this Deepavali, the state government in its order has mentioned that green firecrackers would be allowed. This decision has been made after many suggestions have come in from the public over the sale and use of crackers this Deepavali.

Bengaluru: On Friday, Chief Minister of Karnataka BS Yediyurappa had announced a ban on the use of firecrackers this Deepavali due to the ongoing pandemic COVID-19.

This was great news for many environment activists and patients suffering from breathing illnesses, however, just a few hours after the announcement the Chief Minister issued a statement that the use of green firecrackers would be allowed in the state.

In the statement Yediyurappa said “Many suggestions have come in from the public over the sale and use of crackers this Deepavali. The government is doing everything to contain COVID-19. Given the situation, it is deemed fit to celebrate Deepavali in a simple, meaningful, devotional manner keeping public health in mind. In this regard, it is requested that only green crackers are used”.

Karnataka, which was set to join the list of states like Rajasthan, Odisha, Sikkim, and Delhi, which have banned firecrackers including green firecrackers owing to the pandemic situation, has now rolled back its decision.

The decision comes at a time when the state has been recording more than 3,000 new COVID-19 cases on an average for more than a week now.
