Karnataka: Gaushala in each district at total cost of Rs 15 crore, says Minister Bommai

Synopsis

The Karnataka government has given its approval in setting up gaushalas across the state at a cost of Rs 15 crores. The announcement on the same was made by Home Minister Basavaraj Bommai.

After last year's beef ban, through the introduction of the Karnataka Prevention of Slaughter and Preservation of Cattle Bill, the Karnataka government gave its approval for gaushalas in each district of the state.

As per reports, Rs 15 crore will be spent in setting up one Gaushalas at each Karnataka district and the amount will also be enhanced further.

At present, there are 184 gaushalas in which the cattle shed has a capacity to house 50,000 cattle and efforts will be made to increase the capacity to accommodate over 1.5 lakh cows, besides constructing new gaushalas to help farmers.

The government last year passed the bill in the Assembly amidst Opposition. As per reports, a cow, calf or bull and bullock of all ages and he or she buffaloes below the age of 13 years cannot be slaughtered or transported. Under the bill, a person found violating these rules can be arrested or fined Rs 50,000 to 10 lakh or serve a jail term from 3 years to 7 years.

The government also set up an exemption in case of disease, for research purposes. Once the ordinance comes into effect the government will also register officers at each gaushala for the purpose of monitoring.

Immediately after introducing the bill, the export of beef to neighbouring Goa and Kerala state was impacted and about Rs 2 million worth of beef supply to UAE and other nations was also stopped.
