Synopsis

The student is identified as Kota Onoda and his body was found hanging from the bathroom inside room number 142 of Lohit hostel of the higher educational institution. He was sent to IIT Guwahati on exchange programme for three months from Gifu University in Japan.  

Guwahati: A Japanese student on exchange programme at Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IITG) was found dead inside his hostel room on Thursday.

The student is identified as Kota Onoda and his body was found hanging from the bathroom inside room number 142 of Lohit hostel of the higher educational institution. He was sent to IITG on exchange programme for three months from Gifu University in Japan.

His term of exchange programme was supposed to end on November 30 and he was to return to Japan.

On the fateful day, his hostel mates knocked the door repeatedly but did not receive any answer. They grew suspicious and informed the IITG officers immediately. When the door was force opened, officers found Onoda's body hanging from the ventilator.

The incident is said to have occurred between 3 pm and 3.30 pm, but came to light at night.

He was doing an internship in the Department of Bio-Sciences and Bio-Engineering in IIT-Guwahati. The reason for the death is not known yet.

The college officials informed the ministry of home affairs (MHA) and ministry of external affairs (MEA) about the incident as it falls under foreign affairs.

Efforts on to intimate the family of Onoda's death to his family in Japan.

IITG is one of the prestigious educational institutes of India. However, a student from Andhra Pradesh was found dead in a hostel room early this year.

20-year-old Pannem Pavan Siddardha, from Andhra Pradesh, pursuing electronics and communication engineering at Indian Institute of Technology-Guwahati was found hanging inside his hostel room on January 7.
