India China standoff: Eighth round off military-level talks underway in Ladakh’s Chushul

Synopsis

The Indian delegation is being led by Lieutenant General PGK Menon, who took over the charge of the 14 Corps Commander in mid-October.

New Delhi: In yet another attempt to resolve the border dispute in eastern Ladakh, the eighth round of Corps Commander-level talks between India and China is underway.

The Indian delegation is being led by Lieutenant General PGK Menon, who took over the charge of the 14 Corps Commander in mid-October. Joint Secretary from the Ministry of External Affairs, Navin Srivastava, are also a part of the crucial meeting.

The talks began at 9:30 am in Chushul on the Indian side of the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh. The seventh round of talks was held on October 12, which saw no breakthrough on the disengagement of troops from the several friction points along the LAC.

Following the seventh round of talks, the Indian Army had issued a statement saying that both the countries had agreed 'to maintain dialogue and communication through military and diplomatic channels to arrive at a mutually acceptable solution for disengagement "as early as possible"'.

"They were of the view that these discussions were positive, constructive and had enhanced the understanding of each other's positions," the Indian Army had said.

The Indian and Chinese armies have been locked in a bitter standoff at multiple locations in eastern Ladakh for over six months since May. The relations between the two-nuclear-powered countries deteriorated following the Galwan clash in which 20 Indian Army soldiers were martyred.
