Fire breaks out in Calcutta Medical College and Hospital; no causalities reported

A fire broke out in the Calcutta Medical College and Hospital on Wednesday (March 17) morning. However, there was no major damage and no one was injured.

The fire broke out on the fourth floor of the super specialty building of the medical college. Upon receiving the news, the fire engine went to the spot.

According to sources, the fire has spread in Corona Ward. The fire was brought under control after several attempts.

According to fire sources, the fire broke out in the Corona ward around 8 am on Wednesday. Staff first saw sparks of fire at a plug point on the fourth floor of the hospital. The fire spread immediately before action was taken.

Initially, hospital staff tried to extinguish the fire. The fire department team was informed immediately. The fire is believed to have spread from the oxygen operating machine. Three fire engines arrived at the scene shortly after. Since the incident took place in Corona Ward, panic spread among the patients for a while.

A hospital source said the oxygen operating machine became unusually hot o Wednesday morning. From there the fire spread through a short circuit. According to sources, the fire is now under control. Corona patients are undergoing treatment in that building. There are 30 patients on three floors of the entire ward. However, 10 patients were admitted to that particular ward. The news of the fire spread panic among them. They were removed. Hospital staff kept announcing not to panic unnecessarily. Later the patients returned to their wards. 

A fire department official said, “There was no major damage and no one was injured. The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained.”
