Don't expect your wife to earn, says Madras High Court Bench

After being applauded for its verdict on the Perumal Murugan case, the Madras High Court today upheld that a man expecting his wife to earn and be independent of his income is against Hindu philosophy    

According to a report in The Hindu, the observation was made by Justice P. Devadass while hearing a petition filed by a postman against an order that directed him to pay ₹ 5000 each to his estranged wife and two children. He argued saying that his wife earns enough money to take care of herself and their kids. 

“There is no evidence to establish that she is employed. Even otherwise, it is immaterial because, under the Hindu Law, a husband should maintain his wife. A Hindu husband will not say that his wife must go to work and get herself maintained. Nowhere a Hindu husband while marrying a lady will say: I will marry you provided you must work and earn and feed yourself. It would be against Hindu philosophy,” Justice P. Devadass said.

It was just a couple of months ago when a Delhi court delivered a verdict ordering a woman to get a job instead of depending on her ex-husband’s income.
