In India, breastfeeding has been highly sexualised or considered taboo. An annoying video emerged, highlighting the issue once more, and went viral. The video showed a guy approaching a D-Mart employee who was reportedly taunting and catcalling a nursing mother. According to the clip, the accused was teasingly asking his friends whether they wanted "milk" right in front of the woman.
To make matters worse, the accused was blatantly smiling as the man proceeded to confront him. The video went viral in an instant, prompting several reactions. The majority of people felt the situation to be objectionable, while some urged that the individual be punished. Many people also expressed the desire to normalise breastfeeding in public.
This incident has once again brought the conversation surrounding public breastfeeding and women's safety in retail spaces to the forefront.
The post was published on Instagram under the account 'Liberty Wire'. The viral post received a lot of attention from people.
The video captures the aftermath of the incident, showing the mother and her family confronting the store management. While some staff members are seen looking away, others appear dismissive, fueling online outrage.
"Do we advise guys who are freely standing to pee to go find a toilet? "The audacity to say room andar hai," one person said. "Why is the manager even defending him," another individual commented.
“And he's still smiling. He won't stop this behaviour in the name of a joke. We need to address this issue early in childhood. Children should be taught not every situation is funny and double meaning adult humor is not at all funny but vulgar," said another user.
“Women start to humiliate men for peeing in an open public place. After that they do realise what is shaming,” commented the next person.
"If a mother isn't safe from harassment in a well-lit, CCTV-monitored supermarket, where is she safe?" another commented. Further, a user said, “Why didn't you trash him? That smirk is really irritating.”
