Cyclone Amphan: 72 people dead, including 17 in Kolkata

West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee today said as many as 72 people have died in the state in the aftermath of Cyclone Amphan and 17 of them are from Kolkata.  

Kolkata: West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday said 72 people have died so far in the state due to cyclone Amphan. Of the total, 17 of them were from Kolkata.

The chief minister further said that all the deceased were victims of tree, house collapse and electrocution.

"I have never seen such a disaster before. I will ask PM Modi to visit the state and see the situation," said Mamata Banerjee. She added that there have been casualties. I announce a compensation of Rs 2.5 lakh to the families of those who died in the cyclone.

Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said the severe cyclonic storm is likely to move north-northeastwards and weaken into a deep depression.

Air India Aircraft damaged at Kolkata Airport:

One private aircraft of Air India was left damaged at Kolkata Airport. Two aircrafts, which were parked at the hangar, were not damaged. However, the hangar has been damaged, says Air India chairman and managing director (CMD) Rajiv Bansal.
