Coronavirus: Kerala’s Poonthura residents protest; say essential items not available due to triple lockdown

People of Poonthura, Thiruvananthapuram, which is under triple lockdown, demanded re-opening of shops selling necessary food items to meet their needs  

Thiruvananthapuram: A day after 25 commandos were posted in a coastal village in Kerala's Thiruvananthapuram, residents took to the streets to protest. The residents alleged that essentials are not available due to the triple lockdown.

People demanded that shops selling necessary food items should be opened as soon as possible. They added that they could not buy groceries, vegetables and other necessary food for living due to the stringent restrictions in the coastal area.

According to reports, over 100 residents of the fishermen hamlet had skirmishes with police and special commando officers deployed at the spot.

The entire village has been cordoned off, after 54 coronavirus (COVID-19)cases were reported from Poonthura on Wednesday (July 8). They contracted the coronavirus through local transmission.

Minister Kadakampally Surendran, who is in charge of the district’s pandemic control measures, while talking to media persons, confirmed that super spreading has been detected in the coastal village. Super spreaders are those individuals who pass on the infection to a large number of people.
