Coronavirus: India records highest one-day spike with over 20,000 new COVID-19 cases

With over 20,000 COVID-19 cases, India on Friday recorded the highest one-day increase continuing a grim trend this month.


New Delhi: India reported 379 deaths and highest single-day spike of 20,903 new cases in the last 24 hours as per the health ministry data.

The number includes 2,27,439 active cases, 3,79,892 cured/discharged/migrated cases and 18,213 cases in which the patient has died

The Union health ministry said that the difference between recovered cases and active cases is now more than 1.5 lakh. This further takes the recovery rate to 60.7%.

Meanwhile, the total number of COVID-19 cases in Maharashtra rose by 6,330 to 1,86,626 on Thursday. The state's toll rose to 8,178, while the death rate increased to 4.38. Maharashtra remains the worst-hit state in the country.

Tamil Nadu, the second worst-hit state reported a total of 4,343 new coronavirus cases on Thursday, taking the total number of cases in the state to 98,392, the state health department said.

India crossed the nine-million mark in conducting COVID-19 tests on Thursday with 90,56,173 samples tested till Wednesday.

Officials of Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) said the country now has 1,065 testing labs in the country — 768 in the public sector and 297 in private. The daily testing capacity is going up fast, they said, adding it was around 1.5 lakh per day on May 25 and is more than three lakh per day at present.

After Bharat Biotech's Covaxin, another potential COVID-19 vaccine indigenously developed by Ahmedabad-based Zydus Cadila Healthcare Ltd got nod from the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) on Thursday for human clinical trials, government sources said.

The approval process was fast-tracked following recommendation by the subject expert committee on COVID-19, considering the emergency and unmet medical need during the pandemic.
