A ray of hope to ease the disposal of used PPE kits and other medical waste has risen as Bengaluru students have come up with a device for the purpose

Bengaluru: Bengaluru engineering students have developed a technology for disposal of PPE kits, tubes, syringes and other wastes that are used for COVID-19 treatment.

India produces about 4.5 lakh PPE kits every day. But the disposal of used PPE kits does not take place according to protocol.

Students studying automobile engineering at Dayanand Sagar Engineering College have come up with a solution for it. This technology seems like a ray of hope for the disposal of used PPE kits and other medical plastic waste. The equipment has been named ‘PPE Recycling Machine’.

Using this technology, used PPE kits and all other medical wastes are crushed to smaller pieces and during this process various viruses also get destroyed.

This device can be placed at hospitals and other medical centres, said the brain behind this idea Ashik SV.

The device has different types of chambers. When PPE kits or other plastic are put into the device, the hitting chamber compresses all of it. At around 70 to 100 degree Celsius, it is further crushed.

The fine particles are collected in the final chamber where the coronavirus is destroyed completely as it is exposed to UV rays, said Ashik.

Ashik, Praveen Mounbhargav and Sheetal Balakkuraya under the supervision of Dr HN Suresh, HOD at Dayanand Sagar College of Engineering have developed this device.

The young engineers took up the initiative under the guidance of Dr Naveen BE.

Hope is afloat that the device will help the medical community in disposing of used PPE kits in the right way.
