The Bombay High Court on Wednesday suspended the life sentence of gangster Chhota Rajan in connection with the murder of hotelier Jaya Shetty, who was killed in 2001. The court granted Rajan bail in the case, directing him to furnish a bond of Rs one lakh.

A division bench comprising Justices Revati Mohite Dere and Prithviraj Chavan issued the bail order on Wednesday. This decision comes after a special court had convicted Rajan earlier this year, sentencing him to life imprisonment for the murder of Jaya Shetty.

About 2001 Jaya Shetty murder case

Jaya Shetty, the owner of the Golden Crown hotel located in Gamdevi, central Mumbai, was shot dead on May 4, 2001, by two alleged members of Rajan's gang on the hotel's first floor.

Investigations revealed that Shetty had received extortion calls from Hemant Pujari, a known associate of the Chhota Rajan gang. Shetty's murder was reportedly linked to his failure to pay the extortion amount demanded by Pujari.

Rajan, who is currently serving a life sentence for the murder of veteran crime reporter J Dey, remains detained at Tihar Jail in Delhi while his legal battles continue.
